Alhambra Alta (Alhambra)
Short description of the monument

The "Secano de la Alhambra" is located between three towers: the "Torre de las Infantas", the "Torre de la Cautiva" and the "Torre de los Siete Suelos". At this site, multiple ruins remain from several Arab and Christian buildings. It was given this name, because in the 16th century the water channels, that took the water to the different irrigated lands, were destroyed. The high southeast side of the compound is called "Alhambra Alta", which consists of the dry farming as well as the lands that extend between this dry land and the "Partal" Gardens" and the "Puerta del Vino" (the Wine Gate). Nowadays, part of this land is occupied by the "Palacio de Carlos V" (the Palace of Carlos V).

The "Alhambra Alta" (the High Alhambra) or the Alhambra town («Madinat al Hamra») was more elevated than the "alcazares" (palaces), and was separated from these by a ditch. Between the "Rauda" and the "Patio de los Leones" (the Lion’s courtyard) there is a part of this ditch that still remains.

During the Arab period, a small city was established here, where the principal personages of the court resided and where the administrative and religious centers were located, as well as numerous gardens and palaces. After the conquest of Granada, the citizens of the "Alhambra Alta" (the High Alhambra) had to leave and move to the low city. All the buildings of the high city were destroyed or re-done; that is why there are few original buildings of this part. Two of the buildings that remain are: the "Palacio de Tendilla" and the ex-convent of San Francisco (which was an Arab Palace until it was turned into a convent due to a promise of the Catholic Kings to "San Francisco de Asis").
