“Aljibes” square (Alhambra)
Short description of the monument

This square takes its name from one of the “aljibes” (water tank) that the Count of Tendilla built in 1494 at the precipice that separates the “Alcazaba” from the palaces. These water tanks or “al-yibb”, 34 meters long, 6 meters wide and 8 meters high, formed the actual square after they buried them along with the surrounding streets and squares. This square conforms an extensive esplanade between the towers and the defences of the Alhambra on one side, and the “Wine Gate” and the Arab Palaces on the other. It offers magnificent views of the city, the Albayzin and the Sacromonte districts.

Once we have crossed the “Justicia” Gate, we will get to the “Aljibes” square where the “Wine Gate” is located. The square took its name from the water reservoirs constructed underground, by order of the Count of Tendilla.
