The “Rauda” Tower (Alhambra)
Short description of the monument

This tower is located at the back of the Lion’s Palace, connected to it by a door. For a long period of time, it was thought that this was the place where the kings of Granada were buried, but that cemetery was found outside the palace, more towards the south, and therefore the “Rauda” must have been its main entrance or the entrance to the old palace.

The tower was named after the gardens (“rawda”) that surrounded the building of the royal cemetery. It is located at the back of the Lion’s courtyard, separated by a moat. The earlier ruins of this tower, which dates from the same period as the “Armas” Tower, were discovered in 1887, when the construction annexed to the Harem palace was demolished. It was studied between 1925 and 1926, and only the lowest part of its walls and some tiled pieces remain.
