The Granada Festival

The International Festival of Music and Dance of Granada is one of the most attractive events in early summer in Spain. It has its origin in the symphonic concerts that had been held in the Palacio de Carlos V and in the Cante Jondo Competition since 1883, convened in the Aljibes de la Alhambra Square in 1922, with the assistance of Federico García Lorca, Manuel de Falla , Ramón Gómez de la Serna, Santiago Rusiñol and other intellectuals and artists of the time.

The Festival constitutes a true explosion of artistic activities, with great national and international repercussions, celebrated in the most emblematic corners of the city. The concerts of great symphony orchestras in the Palace of Carlos V, dance and ballet in the open-air theater of the Generalife Gardens, the recitals in the Patio de los Arrayanes de la Alhambra, morning concerts in churches and monuments of Granada , together with the flamenco and music nights of the world in the typical neighborhoods of Albaicín and Sacromonte, congregate every year more than 30,000 people, who come attracted by the magic of the show in unique spaces. All this, together with the best heritage of Granada, its monuments, its gardens and its history, immerse the city and the visitor during the first days of summer in a festive atmosphere that grows year after year.

Since 1970, Manuel de Falla International Courses have been held annually. These courses cover high-level education and help reinforce the studies and professional fields of music and dance.

The Festival in recent editions has exceeded 95% occupancy, hanging the "sold out" sign on multiple occasions, which gives an idea of the impact and dimensions of this event, whose vitality is demonstrated by the increase in the new public that Every year he goes to his calls. The thousands of people that Granada receives during the Festival, coming from France, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, USA, Brazil, South Africa, Colombia or Finland, are joined by numerous fans from Spain and other countries, who follow the Festival through the written press, television, reports in specialized and tourism magazines or radio broadcasts.

The International Festival of Music and Dance of Granada was the first Spanish member of the European Association of Festivals to which it belongs since 1955, and since 1970 it is honored with the Presidency of Honor of Her Majesty The Queen of Spain.

Currently, it is an initiative of the Ministry of Culture, the Andalusian Government, the City Council of Granada, the Diputación de Granada and the University of Granada, and this year it is sponsored by CajaGRANADA, the Puleva Foundation, La Caixa, Ferring, Alhambra, Loewe and Caja Rural Foundation beers. The International Courses are mainly supported by the General Directorate of Cultural Cooperation of the Ministry of Culture. Other institutions, companies and entities collaborate to sustain the general activities.


FEX

As an extension of the Festival, the FEX distributes a significant number of shows and concerts throughout the eight municipal districts of Granada. The diverse and varied contents of the activities allow you to enjoy monumental courtyards, exquisite corners, large squares, cross streets, diverse and plural citizen meetings.

The Fex also fulfills an important mission in the promotion of the performing arts for children and youth, from the shows specially programmed for the little ones, the didactic experiences with the municipalities of Las Gabias and Peligros, to the intense participation of teachers and students of the Manuel de Falla Courses (Course of historical musical interpretation, Course of recovery and interpretation of the Latin American musical heritage, Workshop: dance, creators and social scene, Photography workshop). The musicians and street dancers, the fanfare, the bands and chamber groups of FEGRABAN D, of the Superior Conservatory of Music «Victoria Eugenia» of Granada ,. They will all share their best artistic moment with us. And also the elders will be present in a contemporary dance workshop where art breaks any border of participation. In flamenco we will support new values and proposals. And in the field of popular music groups and artists from different latitudes in Europe or Africa will perform.
