Casa del Horno de Oro

Casa del Horno de Oro

History

The Casa del Horno de Oro stands in the Axares quarter, the quarter "of health" or "of delight", so called in Muslim times because of its pleasant climate and the beauty of its houses. Built at the end of the 15th century, the alterations made in the 16th century turned it into an interesting example of a Morisco house combining Islamic and Castilian features. Its simple façade gives no hint of the architectural harmony hidden inside. A rectangular courtyard with a pool lies at the centre of the building, with the rooms on its shorter sides. The Nasrid-style arcades of the courtyard support a gallery added in Christian times. The south room on the upper floor still has its original plasterwork arch and the niches (tacas) in the jambs at its entrance, as well as the splendid painted wooden ceiling that covers it.
