Royal Hospital of Granada

Royal Hospital of Granada

History

The Royal Hospital was founded by the Catholic Monarchs in 1504 to care for those wounded in the War of Granada. Building began to plans by Enrique Egas in the late Gothic style, but it was Charles V who had it completed in the Renaissance style. The main doorway was not finished until the first half of the 17th century. Today the building is the headquarters of the University of Granada, housing the Rector's Office and other university services, such as the University's Central Library.

It stands between Calle Real de Cartuja, Calle Ancha de Capuchinos and Avenida del Hospicio, where its entrance is. In Muslim times there was a cemetery here (Saad Malik), and after the Christian conquest the land was given to the city as common land.
